GUIDE · MESSAGE IMPORT

How to build a chatbot from messages safely.

Messages can reveal vocabulary, timing, humor, recurring stories, and relationship context. They also contain other people’s private information. A responsible workflow begins with rights and minimization, not bulk upload.

Confirm permission first

Use messages you wrote, messages you are authorized to process, or material covered by explicit permission. A conversation belongs to more than one participant in practical privacy terms, even when one person exported the file.

Remove what the persona does not need

Exclude passwords, financial details, addresses, health information, intimate material, workplace secrets, and unrelated third-party conversations. More data is not automatically better character quality.

Extract patterns and memories separately

Speaking style should become editable personality instructions. Events and facts should become reviewable memories with source references. Keeping them separate makes correction and deletion possible.

Test for leakage and invention

Ask questions that the imported messages do and do not answer. The persona should identify uncertainty instead of filling gaps with convincing fiction, and it should not reveal private details outside the intended context.
